Band 8+: The use of technology makes people less social. Do you agree or disagree

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The rapid development of technology has brought about an ongoing debate about whether technology is making people less interactive. Some people support the idea that technology makes people more isolated and negatively affects human interaction, while others believe that technology is making people more interactive and approachable. This essay will demonstrate that technology enhances social interaction rather than diminishing it.

Firstly, technology has significantly strengthened long-distance communication rather than weakening social interaction. In the past, maintaining relationships with family members or friends who lived far away was very difficult and expensive. However, modern tools such as video calls, FaceTime, and social media platforms allow people to communicate across geographical boundaries in real time. For instance, applications such as WhatsApp and Zoom enable people to see each other and have conversations in real time. As a result, technology helps people maintain strong psychological connections and stay involved in each other’s lives regardless of their physical location.

Secondly, online activities provide new opportunities for social engagement. Many people participate in multiplayer online games, virtual study groups, and collaborative work projects, all of which require communication and teamwork. These digital environments encourage individuals to interact and share ideas. Additionally, social networking allows people to comment, share content, and engage in discussions about topics that may interest them. These interactions may occur in a virtual environment, but still involve real communication and emotional connection. Therefore, technology-mediated interactions do not make people less social, and they also offer alternative and flexible ways for individuals to interact with others in modern society.

Lastly, technology makes it easier to connect with new people and join communities based on shared interests through online forums, social media groups, and social networking platforms. People can engage with individuals who share similar interests such as hobbies, beliefs, and personal goals. This is particularly beneficial for people who may feel isolated in their local environment. To illustrate, some people interested in reading novels can participate in an online community where members can interact, exchange perspectives, and give encouragement. These digital connections may lead to meaningful friendships and in-person interactions. Consequently, technology broadens social networks and facilitates inclusive participation by fostering interaction among people from diverse backgrounds.

In conclusion, although some people argue that technology is making people less sociable, I firmly disagree. Modern technology has strengthened long-distance communication, generated new opportunities, and enhanced individuals’ ability to establish relationships and engage in communities. Therefore, rather than making people less interactive, technology has dramatically transformed and broadened the ways in which people communicate.
