Band 7+: Many people assume that the goal of every country should be to produce more materials and goods. To what extent do you agree or disagree that constantly increasing production is an appropriate goal?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

A growing number of people believe that the aim of every country should be to increase production. I partly disagree with this idea, as the constantly growing production has many adverse effects on the environment.

It is true that producing more materials and goods can contribute to the country’s economy. For example, it allows the country to export goods to other countries, benefitting the nation’s budget. The profits from these manufacturing processes can be allocated to many other fields, such as education, healthcare, and public services. Another benefit is that reducing the unemployment rates, as the expansion of industries would provide many job opportunities.

From an environmental perspective, increasingly more and more industries are the main contributor to the deterioration of the environment. Once the number of factories starts increasing, the toxic gases they emit to the air and the chemicals to the water can lead to water contamination and air pollution. Over time these issues can bring more serious problems, such as an increase in the number of people admitting to the hospitals due to illnesses caused by the poor quality of air, including asthma and bronchitis. As a result, the country has to spend more money on healthcare, which means that the profits may be outweighed by the potential expenses.

In conclusion, while the continuous growth of production can bring many benefits to the country’s economy, its consequences, such as the damage to the environment and the depletion of natural resources, should not be overlooked.
