It is argued that children should be educated about recycling and waste reduction in schools, whereas others believe that this should be the responsibility of parents at home. This essay will discuss both perspectives before presenting my own opinion.
On the one hand, schools are highly effective environment for environmental education. Teachers are usually better equipped with up-to-date knowledge about waste and recycling, as well as more structured teaching methods, so they can explain clearly why recycling is important and how unwanted materials negatively affect the surroundings. Schools can also organize practical activities such as recycling programs, field trips, and environmental campaigns. These activities allow students to apply what they have learned in real situations rather than only understanding theory. As a result, students are more likely to develop strong and lasting habits. Furthermore, schools can ensure that all children receive the same information, which is especially important for those whose parents are not very knowledgeable or interested in environmental protection.
On the other hand, parents also play an important role in shaping children’s behaviour. Children mainly learn through observation, so they are strongly influenced by what their parents do on a daily basis. For instance, if parents regularly sort waste, recycle unwanted materials, or avoid wasting food, children are likely to imitate these actions. Over time, these repeated behaviours become a part of a child’s routine rather than something they only learn in school. Moreover, parents can remind children to practice these positive habits consistently, helping reinforce what they have learned. This is particularly important because such topics may only be covered briefly in the school curriculum, as schools need to focus on many other academic subjects. As a result, under the supervision of parents, children are able to form positive habits for the environment and their own lives.
In conclusion, while schools provide children with in-depth knowledge about the importance of recycling and avoiding waste, parents also play an indispensable role in shaping children’s behaviour. I believe that teaching children to recycle should be a joint effort between schools and parents because both views have valid points. In this way, children are more likely to develop long-term responsible behaviour.
