In an era increasingly shaped by technological advancements, the question of whether technology has rendered individuals progressively alienated, or allowed them to better keep in touch with others has sparked considerable debate. Personally, I believe that, with sensible usage, the integration of technology into modern life paves the way for far more convenient communication.
Arguments in favour of the former perspective highlight how reliance on technology can hinder the essential development of interpersonal skills. Examples of this include platforms like Facebook and Threads. These means of communication often do not require users to interpret non-verbal cues and leave them with far fewer opportunities to practise foundational communication competencies, such as maintaining eye contact. People excessively reliant on digital communication may gradually withdraw from striking up a conversation with others in person, as they become less adept at handling practical situations and struggle to navigate real-world conversations due to limited exposure to face-to-face interactions. This inability can consequently give rise to social isolation, which can further compromise the fabric of our society in the long run.
On the other hand, those defending the role of technology as a catalyst for communication argue that it has effectively eliminated the long-standing geographical barriers that once hampered human connection. A pertinent instance can be seen in the increasing popularity of communication platforms such as Instagram, empowering people from all walks of life to befriend online acquaintances who may even hail from the opposite side of the globe. This was not common back then, as people had to resort to traditional means of communication, including sending letters or traveling. Without the need to travel considerable distances, not only can the widespread use of digital communication technologies offer far more convenient communication but it can also lay a strong foundation for international ties.
In my view, only through the misuse of technology could it exert a pernicious influence on people and result in social isolation. As individuals become more aware of the importance of maintaining healthy face-to-face interactions alongside digital communication, the risks associated with technology are becoming increasingly manageable. When used sensibly, we can leverage the proliferation of technology to foster an increasingly interconnected world in which global connectivity is significantly enhanced.
