It is often argued that individuals are powerless to improve the environment, and the only government and large corporations can effect meaningful change. I strongly disagree with this view.
Overall, government and large companies undeniably hold the greatest power to shape environmental outcomes. Governments can implement policies such as renewable energy and strict pollution regulations, while multinational corporations can transition to sustainable production methods and reduce their carbon footprints at scale.
However, this does not mean individuals have no role to play. Everyday choices such as reducing plastic consumption or using public transport. These reduce resource demand and carbon emissions. Moreover, individual consumer choices can pressure companies to adopt greener practices.
Individual actions also drive political change. Public awareness campaigns have pushed government to enact stronger environmental laws. For instance, public pressure has led to bans on use plastic in many countries and showing how individual voices can translate into systemic policy shifts.
In conclusion, while governments and large companies are critical to solving environmental crises. Individual are far from powerless. I believe both individual and institutional efforts are essential to protecting our planet.
