Band 6+: In the past, important knowledge of culture and history was stored in museums. Nowadays information is freely available on the internet, therefore museums are no longer needed. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Museums has always been vital for storing knowledge of culture and history back in the days, however, this tendency has changed during the modern times in favor for accessing exhibits on the internet. As a result, ongoing debate whether to keep the museums or not has been active. I partly agree with this statement, as museums tend to be a bedrock of cultural representation for people all over the world, but at the same time, it brings out the problem of limited access to artifacts in real time.

On the one hand, museums, that hold artifacts of past, could be a great point of cultural promotion for people from other countries. Exhibits are most likely to be associated with a land it comes from. Hence, people that are fascinated with culture might want to witness everything through their own eyes, as mere observance of pictures on the internet does not bring out emotions in the same way as it does in real time. As an example, countries such as China are visited for their gems of the past that remained untouched -The Great Wall of China, castles, and temples; people wish to spend hours in order to see remnants of history.

On the other hand, difference in location of museums all over the world brings out the problem of limitations. Internet has always been more accessible for the huge public rather than museums that are located in different countries. Consequently, people that live far away from a certain country are deprived of the experiences of seeing wonders of history and culture, while internet gives opportunities to observe them through screen. To illustrate, people that are born in low-income families are most likely to be interested in research of artifacts that are located all over the world, as they are limited in their options for travelling.

To conclude, in contemporary society some of the museums might be changing under the pressure of digitalization, while remaining working in real time. My point of view remains neutral, as museums hold its worth in cultural representation, but sets limitations for people in the face of distance.
