Band 8+: ''Prevention is better than cure''. Researching is too costly so it would be better to invest in preventive measures. To what extent do you agree

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

There is a saying that “prevention is better than cure,” emphasizing it is more crucial for people to take proactive steps to be healthy instead of relying solely on costly treatments. I completely agree with this statement as not only do preventative measures reduce healthcare expenses, but promote healthier lifestyles as well, leading to a more sustainable future for societies.

To begin with, disease prevention significantly lowers the financial burden on both individuals and governments. Severe illnesses such as cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases are frequently treated with costly medical procedures, extended hospital stays, and pricey prescription medicine. For example, organ transplants, such as kidney or liver transplants, involve both the high cost of surgery and lifelong immunosuppressive medications to prevent rejection. These expenses can be overwhelming for patients and healthcare systems alike. Conversely, investing in preventive measures such as public health campaigns, early screening, and immunization programs is far more cost-effective. For instance, vaccinations have significantly decreased the prevalence of polio and eliminated terrible illnesses like smallpox, demonstrating the long-term benefits of prevention.

Additionally, to lower the prevalence of chronic diseases, preventative approaches promote better lifestyles. Governments can support such programs as routine health examinations, educating the public about the value of exercise, and balanced meals. For example, nations that run anti-smoking and anti-alcohol campaigns have seen significant drops in liver-related illnesses and lung cancer. In addition to improving people’s well-being, these lifestyle changes also relieve strain on healthcare systems, which makes it possible to more efficiently distribute resources.

However, some contend that no disease can be completely avoided, especially those brought on by inherited traits or unanticipated outbreaks. Even so, the effects of such diseases can still be lessened by taking preventative action. While strong public health frameworks can better manage epidemics like COVID-19, early assessment for genetic predispositions can allow for prompt treatments. Prevention is, therefore, still a crucial component of an all-encompassing healthcare strategy.

In conclusion, I wholeheartedly concur that spending money on prevention is significantly more advantageous than concentrating only on treatment. Prevention not only saves lives but also guarantees the sustainability of healthcare systems by lowering healthcare expenditures and promoting healthier communities. The foundation of public health programs should be prevention, which should be a top priority for both individuals and governments.
