Band 6+: Some educationalists argue that non-exam, arts-based subjects, such as music, drama, art and craft, should be compulsory in the secondary-school curriculum. They believe that activities such as these can improve overall academic performance. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Nowadays, students learn academic subjects alongside diverse activities at school. Some experts argue that a number of art components, such as music, drama, art and craft should be mandatory for students in order to improve their soft skills and learning ability, whereas others claim this can waste students’ time to learn lessons important for career development. While there are compelling arguments on both sides, I totally agree that these disciplines are a must-have in the secondary school.

By and large, the non-exam courses are considered extracurricular activities that students can improve their creativity and self-expression. A large number of courses such as music, art, drama and craft are designated to explore their sentiments and experiences. For example, when a piece of artwork is created, students will give full concentration on their work and explore how to express the emotions effectively. As a result, this capacity to logical thinking can be applied when it comes to certain acadmic subjects such as maths or sciences, however, they are required to balance their study time for academic responsibilities.

In addition, since these classes are mainly intended for working with peers, each individual can foster their ability to socializing. If they are assigned to group presentations, they can gain valuable insights into negotiation and problem-solving. For instance, most of these subjects are significantly offered to the specific students who show potential interest to it, for this reason, they must corporate with other students so as to improve interpersonal relationships. Therefore, this expereince will allow them to enhance communication skills.

From my perspective, the integration of arts-based subjects into school curriculum are one of the topics that most parents desire in today’s society. Although it would take a certain amount of time for building academic backgrounds required for a good job, the competencies that students will gain from these activities are also valuable for real life. Thus, I definitely believe that teaching the art subjects in secondary school can be beneficial for student
