Band 7+: Some people believe that everyone has a right to have access to university education and that governments should make it free for all students no matter what financial background they have. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

People have different perspectives regarding whether higher education should be free or not. While many think that it is a right for everyone, I am inclined to believe that a college education cannot be totally free.

On the one hand, many people agree that having a college education is everyone’s right. This could be due to the fact that knowledge at this level is priceless and could open several doors for a prosperous future life. For example, students with poor financial situation could join university if the education fees were fully waived. This could help these learners to compete in the employment market and get better jobs to afford their family expenses and get out of poverty life. On the contrary, if this did not happen most of these students would not be able to join higher education. Thus, this education will be only for rich people.

On the other hand, I hold the notion that there is no obligation for the government to make post-secondary studies free. This is usually owing to the fact that making university admission free may cause several economic issues. Therefore, authorities should impose high taxes on their citizens to be able to afford many facilities. For instance, the government can hire an enormous number of professors to be able to teach the excessive number of enrolled students. In addition, if many students join the graduate studies levels, the learning halls and classes will be extremely crowded with learners, and the government should tend to build more universities and institutions.

By way of conclusion, despite many beliefs that free higher education is a right of every person, I hold the notion that free college admission could have adverse economic impacts on society.
