With regard to the challenges and difficulties, some individuals may hold the fatalistic belief that adverse circumstances cannot be addressed by themselves. Others, however, counterargue this assertion, emphasizing that people have the competence to facilitate the improvement of negative situations. From my point of view, I believe that individuals’ motivation to engage in proactive behavior and intention to change the current conditions deserve to be considered.
Regarding the first viewpoint, it is true that some huge challenges are hard to combat based on merely personal effort. For instance, in contemporary society, some significant environmental issues such as climate change and global warming are inevitably occurring at the global level. In this vein, individual-level actions cannot entirely combat these problems. Another case is that large-scale unemployment is usually caused by economic recession and downturn, which is hard to conquer by individuals’ efforts.
Nonetheless, people’s initiatives can also play a role in alleviating and combating the negative consequences. Within the context of climate change, citizens can make pro-environmental behaviors in daily life rather than simply obeying unwanted situations, taking the cases of saving water consumption, planting trees, and resisting fast fashion clothing. Through personal efforts, we could also have a positive impact on improving current situations. Moreover, when encountering unemployment, people can proactively study relevant knowledge and skill sets to enhance their abilities and become more competitive in the job market.
Taken together, while accepting unfavorable conditions is understandable, it is noteworthy that personal actions and decision-making can also have an effect on changing adverse situations.
