Band 8+: The rise of social media platforms has made it easier for people to vent their frustrations and complaints publicly. What is the consequence of this trend? Is there any benefit to expressing complaints on social media?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The increasing number of social media platforms has made it simpler for individuals to distribute their disappointments and complaints publicly. Posting adverse comments can lead to a depressed and vulnerable generation. However, for some, expressing frustration can be a way of relieving stress.

On the one hand, spreading negative thoughts in a space where not everyone can filter and perceive information adequately (especially children and teenagers) can lead to a more depressive generation. In the 21st century, where the level of influence from social media platforms has risen and most people post their photos and videos, they can be subjected to subjective criticism. Moreover, such criticism and unfavorable comments can lead to mental disorders in a young, mentally unstable generation. For example, according to global statistics, about one-third (34.8%) of adolescents suffer from trolling and cyberbullying on the Internet, and 5% of them end their lives by suicide. Hence, the distribution of frustration and criticism can have fatal outcome.

On the other hand, expressing frustrations can be cathartic and reduce personal stress, especially when receiving validation from others. Most people, notably adults, tolerate significant stress and burnout due to their occupations or personal issues. In platforms such as Reddit, Quora, and Hacker News, to name but a few, individuals, as a rule, write complaints, exchange their grief or dissatisfaction, and seek support from online acquaintances. The most striking example is Japan, where roughly a quarter of adults prefer to stay at home and communicate with others only through the Internet. Thus, social media platforms have their own advantages for adults.

In conclusion, as the use of social media has increased, frustrations and complaints have become more visible. Publishing negative thoughts negatively affects the younger generation, but for others, venting their anger may be a means of relieving stress.
