Positive And Negative

Band 6+: Nowadays, more and more jobs and tasks which involve hard physical work are done by machines. Do the positive of this trend outweigh the negative effects?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In this modern society, there is an increasing number of jobs where hard physical work is required, are being replaced by technical machinery. Although this trend might cause an increase in the unemployment rate, its benefits in terms of protection and physical health make this phenomenon outweigh its negative impacts.

Firstly, having machines complete hard physical work is beneficial because it prevents people from being exposed to potential danger. In other words, this trend will secure human’s safety, lowering the rate of getting injured in the workplace. As an apt illustration, construction workers are mostly worked at a construction site with uncertainty and danger surrounded. If machines take all the responsibilities of building construction and transporting raw materials, it will largely enhance the workers’ safety. Therefore, it is worth implementing robots to replace this hard physical work owing to their function of preventing people from external danger.

Additionally, the trend of this implementation will improve workers’ physical health, preventing them from suffering from physical pain and diseases. They often conduct work under a detrimental environment with bad air quality, heavy lifting, and burning conditions, which will cause harm to their physical health. For example, some construction workers often work under burning weather, which potentially leads to their heatstroke. In addition to this, doing heavy lifting contributes to their back pain or muscle soreness. Consequently, if machines can help, it decreases workers’ concerns about physical health, providing a better working experience.

However, this trend still embodies a shortcoming, which is the growth of the unemployment rate due to the replacement of work. This means that many of these employees who are carrying out hard physical work are going to lose their profession, resulting in financial constraints for their families. Take waiters and waitresses as an example; comprehensive work, including ordering, delivering food, and cleaning, can be replaced by artificial intelligence. Under this circumstance, they may encounter the situation of not having stable income resources, leading to their uncertain lives.

In conclusion, there is an ongoing debate discussing whether the positive impacts of replacing jobs that require hard physical work with machines are more advantageous. Despite its potential increase in unemployment rate, it is generally suggested that this trend is beneficial owing to its functions of protection when it comes to external danger and physical health.
