In this ever-changing world, it has been ubiquitous that individuals around the world use social media frequently to socialize with other people and be updated on news events. Although this trend may bring about some benefits, I would argue that they are eclipsed by the drawbacks.
There is no denying that technology can lead to several advantages. One of the main benefits is its ability to foster global interconnectedness. It has effectively bridged the relationship between individuals worldwide, allowing people to stay in touch with their friends and family when living far from home. Another benefit is that using technology provides individuals with various opportunities to enroll at several events and celebrations through the Internet. For example, when having a business trip, joining relatives’ weddings is impossible, so a livestream on Facebook is an effective way for people to follow these important events.
Conversely, this technology also harbors disadvantages, particularly in bullying and harassment. This can be explained by the fact that social media like Facebook or Instagram can become a toxic environment where users can be verbally assaulted because there are only a few rules, most of which are spoken rules rather than established guidelines, that restrict hateful and abusive content. Moreover, the increasing use of technology can display the importance of direct contact with other people in real life. Nowadays, young people tend to prefer living in a virtual world rather than in the real world. This may cause some serious mental effects, such as stress, anxiety, and depression.
In conclusion, while I recognize this trend might possess many advantages. I am of the opinion that they are outweighed by the long-term drawbacks.
