In terms of sodium, dinner has the highest consumption at 43%, followed by 29% in lunches and 14% in both breakfasts and snacks. Saturated fat shows a similar trend, with dinners having the highest intake at 37%. Americans consume almost equal amounts of saturated fat and sugar in lunches and breakfasts. However, saturated fat is consumed more than sodium in snacks (21% and 14% respectively).
Sugar, on the other hand, ranks second in dinners but is the most important nutrient in snacks, accounting for almost half at 42%. In contrast, sugar constitutes just under 20% of breakfasts and lunches.
