The two maps illustrate transformations that took place in Frenton between 1990 and 2012.
Overall, during the 22-year period Frenton experienced significant changes, which made it more residential area. These alterations included emergence of new apartment blocks, a technopark, a restaurant and a hotel adjacent to golf course alongside the repurposing of cinema and shops.
In 1990, high street ran from the south-west, dividing the map into two parts, to the north-east. On the right of the high street there was a large area, including the café and the park, near which were the dwelling houses. In the bottom left corner of the map there was the shopping blocks located just behind the theatre. Playing fields, surrounded by trees, were in the northernmost part of Frenton, next to the school building. There were two opposite buildings – the small hospital and the bank – above the library which was next to the wooden area.
In 2012, there were considerable changes occurred on the both western and eastern side of the high street, except for school and library which stood untouched throughout the period. Houses, situated in the east, were replaced by the blocks of flats which were built attached to the new apartment building. Where previous café and park had been there were now the hotel and the golf course. The old theatre and the shops were converted into cinema and a large supermarket, respectively. Playing fields along with trees, at the top of the map, were demolished and another apartment blocks were built. Other transformations included expansion of former hospital building and the emergence of the new restaurant in place of the bank alongside the replacement of the trees by the technopark.
