Giving students homework assignments is becoming the subject of concern nowadays. While some groups of people think that it is crucial in their learning, others hold the idea that it contributes to the burden of their education, leading to overload of academic work. I think homework is absolutely important, however it should not impact students negatively.
On the one hand, homework is critically important for students, as it is often aimed at making them think individually. Doing homework at home means working without teacher’s involvement and this leads students to improve their own problem-solving skills. For example, tasks from science subjects usually require critical thinking and these types of skills help students not only in their studies but in their real-world situations also. Another huge advantage of homework is that it is by far the best way of consolidation and better understanding of the subject. When students are doing their homework, they need to revise particular rules or concepts and this frequent exposure results in excelling in their subjects.
Although homework is quite essential, it should not be a cause of problems. Usually, too much homework causes stress in students. Constant chain of academic work can sometimes make students frustrated and instead of getting good results in their subjects, they may get exhausted and inactive due to excess amount of paperwork. For instance, students also need some time to relax and re-fresh their mind. Secondly, being bombarded with homework means less social interaction with other such as family members or friends. This brings about social isolation. For example, some students who study and work at the same time cannot allocate time for themselves as a result of deadlines for the homework.
In conclusion, doing homework provides some benefits like improvement of skills and helps excel in subjects, while it comes with some disadvantages also such as less communication and stressful environment. However, I believe that the main aim of homework is to provide students with an enjoyable activity not a set of tedious tasks.
