Overall, the total number of British searchers in September 2010 was higher than that of November 2004. Furthermore, Google was the most used search engine amongst the US searchers.
From November 2004 to October 2007, there were 4.5 billion US searchers recorded in Nov 2004, with almost 35% taken up by Google and Yahoo, whereas the three remaining search engines accounted for under 20%, with Ask Jeeves being the lowest, at about 5%. By Oct 2007, the proportion of Google subsequently surged to 60%, while the figure for Yahoo, Microsoft, and AOL witnessed a reverse pattern, at approximately 20%, 10%, and 5%, respectively. Meanwhile, Ask Jeeves maintained its percentage at 5%.
From October 2007 until September 2010, Google’s proportion peaked at nearly 70% at the end of the period. Moreover, the figures for Yahoo fell to under 20% by Sept 2010, and that of AOL and Ask Jeeves exhibited a marginal, but steady, decrease, which both made up only 4% at the end. By contrast, Microsoft’s percentage bounced back to roughly over 10%, adding up the total number of searcher within the UK to 16 billion by Sept 2010.
