Compulsory military service has been implemented in many countries to maintain national security and support peacekeeping missions. In Thailand, young men are required by law to join the defence forces through a lottery system. While some people believe that this system promotes national stability and patriotism, others question its relevance in the modern world. This essay will discuss both perspectives before presenting my opinion.
On the one hand, compulsory military service offers several benefits, including discipline, responsibility, physical fitness, and mental endurance. Recruits are required to follow a strict daily routine, including physical training and structured schedules. These experiences help build self-control and resilience, which can be valuable in both military and civilian life. Furthermore, the training environment encourages teamwork, leadership, and a sense of national pride.
On the other hand, not everyone is willing to serve in the military, and individuals should have the freedom to choose their own path. A voluntary recruitment system may be more suitable in today’s society, as it attracts individuals who are genuinely motivated to serve. This approach may lead to a more professional and committed military force, as personnel join by choice rather than obligation.
In my opinion, military service should not be compulsory. Although it contributes to national security and helps prepare reserve forces for emergencies, individuals should have the right to decide their own careers based on interest and ability.
In conclusion, while compulsory military service plays an important role in building national defence and offering valuable life skills, there are also valid arguments for adopting a voluntary system. Offering incentives and career opportunities may be a more effective way to attract capable individuals into the armed forces.
