Overall, there was a noticeable shift in tourists’ preferences over the ten-year period. While annual events were the main attraction in 2006, restaurants became the most popular reason for visiting in 2016. In addition, the total number of tourists increased significantly.
In 2006, attending annual events accounted for the largest share of visitors at 45%, followed by museums at 27%. Restaurants and theaters attracted smaller proportions, at around 13% and 10% respectively, while other reasons made up only 5%.
By 2016, the pattern had changed considerably. Restaurants became the dominant attraction at 41%, whereas the proportion of tourists attending annual events declined to 32%. Museums also saw a drop to about 15%, and theaters fell slightly to 8%. Other reasons, however, rose modestly to 8%.
Furthermore, the total number of tourists nearly doubled, increasing from approximately 1 million in 2006 to about 1.9 million in 2016.
