The picture illustrates the growth of a village near London called Chorleywood from 1868 to 1994.
Overall, it is clear that the growth of the village came from the improvement of transport infrastructure. At the same time, this village itself went through four major developments as can be seen from the picture.
First, from 1868 to 1883, the original village began with a small block alongside of the main road. Plus, this village also located next to the gold course as well. Next, the village expanded its size to the south next to the original block and remained to one of the main roads in the west of the picture from 1883 to 1922, and Chorleywood station also pass through within this area. While a railway was established in 1909 from west to east side of the map, between 1922-1970, two major expansions from of the area had taken place along the railway and the intersection of the railway and main road on the west.
Moreover, in 1970, a motor way was built from the south to north intersect with the other main road on the north side of the map. Between 1970 and 1994 period, further development of the village had taken places along the motorway which is located at the intersection of the motorway with railway and main road on the south and North side respectively.
