Overall, the population in New York city increased significantly over the period. However, although Manhattan was the most populated at the beginning, over time more residents lived in other districts.

In 1800, New York City had a small population of 79,261 people. Most of them lived in Manhattan, which had 60,515 residents, accounting for 76% of total population. The other districts had only 18,701 population, making up 24% of total population.

By 1990, the city’s residents grew rapidly to over 3,4 million. Manhattan’s population increased to about 1.85 million, but its share dropped to 54%. At the same time, the population of the other districts rose to around 1.59 million, accounting for 46%.

In 2000, the total population rose sharply to around 8,0 million. The population who lived in Manhattan fell to approximately 1.54 million, only accounting for 19% of total population. In contrast, the other districts grew strongly, accounting for 81% of total.
