Band 4+: Last week, you lost your luggage while traveling on holiday. Luckily, you have travel insurance. Write a letter to the manager of your insurance company. In your letter: Describe the characteristics of what you lost Explain how you lost it Tell the insurance company what you need from them Write at least 150 words. You do NOT need to write any addresses. Begin your letter as follows: Dear Sir or Madam,

The letter addresses all three bullet points, but the development of the ideas is limited and the response lacks the necessary detail to fully satisfy the task requirements. For example, the explanation of what is needed from the insurance company is slightly confused; the prompt asks you to write to an insurance company (implying a claim for compensation), but the letter is written as if you are asking the insurance company to physically find and return the bag, which is typically the role of the transport provider or airline. To improve, ensure you understand the context of the prompt: insurance companies provide financial reimbursement for lost items rather than searching for them. You should focus on requesting a claim settlement or reimbursement for the value of the lost items. Additionally, work on grammatical accuracy, particularly regarding sentence structure, capitalization (e.g., 'I' instead of 'i'), and the use of formal transitions. Expanding on the value of the items lost would also help meet the word count and depth required for a higher score.

The letter follows a logical sequence by addressing the three bullet points in order. However, the use of cohesive devices (e.g., 'Well', 'Actually', 'Furthermore', 'Therefore') feels mechanical and is not always used correctly to link ideas. Some transitions are abrupt, and the paragraphing, while present, does not fully support a smooth flow of information. To improve, focus on using linking words more naturally to show the relationship between sentences rather than just starting every sentence with a transition word.

The vocabulary used is quite basic and repetitive. There are several instances of incorrect word choices, such as 'upper birth' instead of 'upper berth' and 'designation' instead of 'destination'. Additionally, the phrasing 'black and white combination' is somewhat awkward. To improve, try to use more specific descriptive adjectives and collocations related to travel and insurance (e.g., 'lost property', 'contents of the bag', 'compensation', 'itinerary').

Grammatical errors are frequent and occasionally impede the reader's understanding. There are significant issues with sentence structure, verb tenses (e.g., 'iam writing', 'to finding', 'i realise'), and capitalization (e.g., 'i' instead of 'I', 'karanada' instead of 'Karnataka'). Punctuation is also inconsistent. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence structures, ensuring subject-verb agreement, and consistently capitalizing the personal pronoun 'I' and proper nouns. Practicing the use of past tenses for describing completed events is also essential.
