The pie charts illustrate the proportion of electricity production from five different fuel sources in France in 1990 and 2010.
Overall, nuclear power became the dominant source of electricity over the period, while the contribution of coal, oil, natural gas, and hydro power declined significantly.
In 1990, coal and hydro power were the joint largest sources, each accounting for 28% of total electricity generation. Oil and nuclear power followed with 22% and 17% respectively, while natural gas contributed the smallest share at 6%.
By 2010, nuclear power had risen dramatically to 67%, making it by far the leading source of energy. In contrast, coal and oil both fell to 13%, representing less than half of their earlier shares. Hydro power also dropped slightly to 4%, and natural gas declined to just 2%, the lowest figure among all fuel types.
