Overall, the total police budget increased over the two-year period, and salaries remained the largest area of expenditure despite a slight decrease in their proportion. At the same time, spending on technology rose noticeably.
In terms of income, the total budget grew from £304.7 million in 2017 to £318.6 million in 2018. The largest contribution in both years came from the national government, which increased slightly from £175.5 million to £177.8 million. Local taxes also rose significantly, from £91.2 million to £102.3 million, while other sources such as grants remained almost unchanged at around £38 million.
Regarding expenditure, salaries accounted for 75% of the budget in 2017 but fell to 69% in 2018. In contrast, spending on technology increased from 8% to 14%. Expenditure on buildings and transport stayed constant at 17% in both years.
