Southland’s main exports can be split in three categories: international tourism, dairy products, meat products. The first two are the sectors that have contributed the most to the Southland’s gains in the past 25 years while meat products have contributed the least.
In 2000, tourism sector was the leader of sales with 8 billions, followed by dairy products with 7 billions and by meat products in third position with 6 billions.
Now the situation has changed: despite an increase of both the budgets coming from tourism and dairy products, the latter became the first by reaching the value of 10 billions while tourism exports increased by only one billion. Conversly, meat products exports fell down and today they are between 4 and 5 billions.
From the chart we can see some estimates for the year 2025: tourism is going to recover its predominant position approaching to 10 billions, while we are going to see a reduction of the sales by the 0.5 percentage for both dairy products and meat products
