Overall, all three countries saw a clear increase in ownership of all four electronic devices over the period. The UK had the highest rates of ownership in both years, while Japan had slightly lower figures, especially for smartphones in 2010.
In 2010, television was already very common in all three countries, with around 90% of households owning one. By 2020, this number rose slightly to between 94% and 98%. Computer ownership also increased significantly, from around 60-70% to around 85-90%.
The biggest changes were seen in smartphone and internet access. In 2010, less than half of households had smartphones, but by 2020, this figure reached around 80-85% in all countries. Similarly, internet access increased sharply from about half to more than 90% of households, showing how technology became essential in modern life.
