Overall, China witnessed a decline in applications, whereas the US and Japan saw a rise in applicants. Remarkably, by the end of the term, the number of US students by a large margin. Russia’s statistics stayed steady, despite having the fewest candidates overall.
In the beginning, with over 25,000 applications, Chinese applicants made up the largest figure in the first year. By 2006, the number had dropped significantly to about 18,000; in 2007, it was leveling off. Furthermore, in the last year, it decreased slightly to 15,000.
On the other hand, the number of US applicants showed a consistent upward trend, beginning at about 13,000 and approaching parity with China in 2006 before finishing for higher at China’s inaugural figure of over 25,000. Japan saw a little increase in applications over the period, from about 6,000 to 10,000 at the conclusion, albeit at a far slower rate. Last but not least, over the relevant period, the number of Russian applications that the notion’s colleges constantly received hovered around 3,000.
