Overall, the number of UK and USA tourists visiting Australia increased significantly in 2005 while Japan experienced a noticeable decline. Most of the tourists choose to stay at a hotel in the first two years but it saw a marked drop in late period. In contrast, backpacking gradually became more popular over the years .
In more details, over 1.4 million Japanese tourists traveled to Australia in 1995 which was twice as much as the UK at the same time and significantly outnumbering those from the USA at 400.000. However,in 2005 the Japanese visitors fell sharply at around 1.1 million while the UK and USA witnessed a dramatic growth, each reaching approximately 1.5 million.
In terms of lodging, in 1995 hotels had a large number of customers which started at around 1.500 million people compared to only about 500.000 who opted to backpacking. Hotels continually increase dramatically and reach their peak at 2.500 million in 1995, before falling considerably under 1.500 million in the next five years. Meanwhile, backpacking steadily gained popularity, rising threefold over the period to match the hotel’s figure at about 1.500 in 2005.
