Overall, teaching quality remained the most important factor in both years. However, the importance of sports facilities increased significantly, while proximity to home became less relevant over time.
In 1985, the most common reason for choosing a university was teaching quality (22%), followed by degree programs (20%). Proximity to home (17%) and resources (15%) were also considered important, whereas sports facilities were the least influential factor at 12%.
By 2005, the percentage of students selecting a university for teaching quality increased to 26%, keeping it as the most important factor. Sports facilities saw the biggest rise, more than doubling to 28%. In contrast, degree programs remained stable at 20%, while proximity to home dropped to 10%. The importance of resources also decreased slightly to 12%.
