Overall, the number of apartments approved for construction in all cities followed an upward trajectory, albeit at varying degrees. Of particular note is that the figure for Sydney recorded the most significant rise, while Perth registered the lowest change compared to other cities over the period.
Focusing on Sydney and Melbourne, both showed big changes. The number of apartments approved for construction in Sydney increased slightly from 15,000 to around 17,000 between 2012 and 2014, but this was followed by a dramatic rise to about 32,000, taking the lead by the end of the period. Despite a moderate decline from 17,000 to 15,000 in 2012, the figure for Melbourne went up notably to 24,000 in 2015. Then, this figure again faced a gradual fall to around 22,000 at the end of the period.
As for the other two cities, they both followed a somewhat similar pattern. Starting at 7,000, the index for Brisbane rose considerably to 14,000. However, that figure then suddenly reduced negligibly to 13,000 at the end of the period. Perth started at only 2,000, which afterwards grew significantly to just over 5,000 until 2014. The figure then stood more static by 2015, after which it decreased substantially to 5,000 by the end of the period.
