The chart illustrates how many governments across 4 countries invested in transport infrastructure from 1990 to 2005.
Overall, there was a decline in the share of the government’s budget on roads and transport in Portugal, Italia and the United Kingdom, while a rise was seen in the USA. In addition, Portugal generally had the highest figures during the period.
The share of Portugal’s government spending started at roughly 27% in 1990, after which it experienced a consistent decrease to approximately 23%, before ending the period at 20%. Conversely, the figures for the USA rose from just over 10% in 1990 to exactly 15% in 2005, despite a small fall in 1995.
Approximately 22% of Italian’s national expenditure was spent on the transport system, with subsequent fluctuations and a final drop from 24% in 2000 to 18% in 2005. Similarly, the figures for the UK fluctuated in the range from 9% to 13% from 1995 to 2000, before ending the period at 15%.
