The bar chart illustrates the percentage of men who participated in senior development positions in three different companies from 1980 to 2010.
Overall, it is readily apparent that the participation of men increased significantly in all three companies over the given years. Notably, from 1980 to 1990, IBM always had fewer participants than the other companies; however, from 1990 onwards, it surpassed Microsoft and Apple.
From 1980 to 1990, the percentage of men who participated in IBM had the lowest participants, at about 3%, before climbing considerably to almost 12% in 1999, Microsoft then followed a steady upward trend from about 8% to 10%. Meanwhile, the figure for male participants in Apple was exactly 15%, and then declined slowly to almost 12%.
By 1990, IBM experienced a sharp rise from almost 28% in 1995 to around 62% in 2010, and became the highest male participants throughout the survey. Microsoft increased gradually from 1995 to 2010, then rose rapidly to about 45% in 2010. The figure for two former companies surpassed Apple, which just accounted for almost 28% in the last year of survey
