The given bar chart illustrates how the proportion of participants changed in ten sports in Canada in two different years, 1998 and 2005. Overall, almost all figures followed a downward trend with the exception of soccer which saw a slight increase.
As for golf and ice hockey, they were generally highest among all sports, decreasing from 22% and 18% to around 20% and 17%, respectively between 1998 and 2005. Baseball witnessed the largest decrease, at 8 percentage points and almost halved, from 16 to 8. Swimming followed a similar pattern with going down gradually from 14% to 11%.
In terms of sports participation rates under 10, basketball and volleyball started at the same percentage with 9% in 1998 and experienced a dramatic reduction with the respective figures of 8% and 7% in 2005. Cycling and downhill skiing showed similar patterns, dipping marginally from roughly 8% to 7%. Tennis also showed a marked decline from 8% to nearly 6%.
Meanwhile, the reverse is true for soccer which showed a clear growth. Soccer hovered around 8% and rose to almost 10%.
