The charts illustrate the proportion between male and female athletes in the Olympics, as well as changes in numbers among participants of both sexes, which had been taking place since the start of the championship in the year 1924 until 2012.
Overall, there was a clear correlation between the increase of women, participated in the Olympics, and the whole rise of competitors.
A closer examination of the charts reveals, that females were hardly represented in the year 1924, hence, the total number of athletes was respectively on its lowest level (roughly 3000 members). Afterwards, the women figure accounted for nearly 500 individuals, making the general proportion of competitors to rise steadily up to 5000 by 1952. This consistent increase had continued until 1984, when females occupied 1,500 positions, while the total number of athletes soared up to 6,500 correspondingly.
Looking at the year 2012, the women membership made up at least three times more in comparison with last decades. According to this, the whole sum of athletes skyrocketed to 10,500 individuals, represented in the Olympics.
