Overall, there was a decrease in the percentage of three people, four people, five people and six people per household in the UK, while the figures for one person and two people saw an increase between 1981 and 2001. In addition, two people per household had the highest figure throughout the period.
The percentage of three people per household in the UK started at 20% in 1981, after which it experienced a drop to 17% in 2001. The figure for four people decreased from 18% to 15% in the 20 years period. Similar changes, but to lesser extents, were seen in the figures for five people and six people, which dropped from 8% to 6% and from 6% to 2% between 1981 and 2001 respectively.
Conversely, 17% of one person living in each household in the UK in 1981, with a subsequent dramatic increase to 26% in 2001. A similar change was seen in the figure for two people, which rose from 31% to 34% throughout the period
