The line graph shows the percentage of households which owned one or more cars and no cars in the UK from 1952 to 2007. Overall, owning a car became more common throughout the period. Notably, the proportion of households with no cars decreased exponentially and households families with one car had its biggest increase in the first sixteen years.
Initially, more than 90% of households did not own any cars. Nevertheless, their number went down gradually as the percentage of households with cars was inclining gradually. By the end of the period famlilies without cars had decrased to well over 20%.
Although hoseholds which used only one car was approximately 12% in 1951, their figure skyrocketed reaching above 40% in 1967. During the following years, the figure remained almost stable till the end of the period. Households with two cars increased gradually from about 2% to 19%. Having three or more cars, which was not common until 1967, somewhat mirrored the trend of two car owners but it was not as intense as other households and was below 10 %.
