Overall, the figure experienced an extremely downward trend. Children’s books decreased significantly throughout the period. Top audio-visual materials and adult fiction declined slightly. Adult non-fiction remained stable.
In 1995, the total amount of all four various books was approximately 1600 million. Children’s books were the favourite around 1113 million. Five years later, the number fell sizeably to 161 million. Top audio-visual materials, the second most popular, had 330 million, before dropping to 280 in 2000. Lastly, adult fiction fell from 98 to 93 million whereas adult non-fiction increased by 6 million.
Between 2000 to 2005, the number of borrowed books continuously decreased from around 600 million to above 500 million. Top audio-visual materials and children’s books both reduced by 50 million, from 280 to 230 million and 161 to 150 million. Adult nin-fiction went down slightly by 10 million, from 113 to 104 million. Finally, adult fiction decreased from 93 to 60 million.
