Overall, there were significant gender-based differences in sports participation between Australian boys and girls. Boys were much more likely to participate in football, while girls showed considerably higher participation in netball. Notably, non-participation was relatively uncommon among both genders.
Looking at swimming first, participation rates were noticeably high for both boys and girls, at approximately 14% and 16%, respectively. Furthermore, football exhibited the most pronounced gender gap, with 20% of boys participating compared to only 4% of girls. A similar but opposite trend was observed in netball, where girls had a much higher participation rate than boys, with figures of 18% for girls and just 2% for boys.
In terms of basketball, participation levels were moderate, with 6% of boys and nearly 7% of girls taking part. Ultimately, the percentage of children who did not participate in any sport was relatively low for both boys and girls; it was 2% for boys and 4% for girls.
