Overall, there were significant gender-based variations in sports participation between Australian boys and girls. While boys were far more likely to take part in football, girls showed generally much higher participation in netball. Notably, non-participation was somewhat uncommon and least popular among both genders.
Regarding swimming first, participation was noticeably high among both boys and girls, at approximately 14% and 16%, respectively. Moreover, football displayed the most pronounced gender gap, with 20% of boys attending, whereas only 4% of girls did. The similar but opposite pattern can be seen in netball, where girls were the most dominant compared to boys, with respective figures of 2% and 18%.
As for basketball, it attracted moderate levels of participation, accounting for 6% of boys and nearly 7% of girls. Ultimately, the percentage of children who did not participate in any sport was relatively low for both boys and girls; the former had 2%, and the latter comprised 4%.
