The line graph gives information about the number of three different types of crimes in Newport city centre between 2003 and 2012. Overall, While burglary saw the sharpest fall over this period, other crimes fluctuated, and robbery remained the lowest throughout this time.
In 2003, just below 3,500 burglaries took place , which was the highest figure in this year. Although the figure rose, reaching a peak of about 3,700 burglaries in 2004, it then dropped sharply to approximately 1,100 in 2008. The number of burglaries rose to 1,500 before remaining almost steady for the rest of the period, at about 1,500.
Car theft was the second most common crime in 2003, with about 2,800 cars being stolen. This category remained almost stable for two years until 2005, when the number of car thefts declined to 2,000 in 2006. From this point onwards, car theft experienced an upward trend, overtaking burglaries from 2007 onwards, reaching close to 3,000 thefts in the final year. This was the highest figure in 2012.
Only about 600 robberies took place in 2003. The number of robberies fluctuated over the period, dropping to a trough of 500 in 2008.
