The line graph compares three types of crime in terms of the number of incidents reported in the inner city of Newport between 2003 and 2012.
Overall, the rates of car thefts and robberies fluctuated heavily throughout the period, while the figure for burglaries saw a considerable decline and was eventually surpassed by car theft incidents.
In 2003, burglary was the most common crime, with approximately 3400 reported cases. This figure then reached a peak of around 3700 in the following year, before experiencing a downward trend until 2008, at which point the figure hit a low of roughly 1100 incidents. The number of burglaries rose slightly to about 1400 before fluctuating marginally for the rest of the period, at about 1300. In contrast, car theft cases remained stable during the first three years, at around 2800. This figure fell slightly to 2100 in 2006 before rising to 2300 by 2007, outnumbering burglary incidents to become the most committed crime.
Meanwhile, robbery recorded the fewest instances. It started at around 600 incidents in 2003 and fluctuated modestly between 500 and 700, finishing at around 700 cases in 2012.
