The chart illustrates changes in three types of crime in Newport city centre – burglary, car theft, and robbery – between 2003 and 2012.
Overall, the number of burglaries fell dramatically during this period, while incidents of car theft remained relatively stable. Robbery, on the other hand, was the least common crime throughout the years.
In 2003, burglary was the most frequent crime, with around 3,400 cases. It rose to about 3,800 in 2004, then dropped sharply to just over 1,000 by 2008. After that, the number slightly increased and stayed around 1,500 by 2012.
Car theft started at about 2,800 incidents in 2003, showing only small fluctuations. It fell a little in 2006 but rose again after 2008, ending at roughly 2,700 in 2012. Robbery showed the lowest figures overall, starting at around 700 and staying between 500 and 900 cases during the whole period.
In summary, burglary experienced a sharp decrease, while car theft remained fairly steady and robbery stayed low throughout the decade
