The line graph illustrates changes in the rates of three different types of crime, namely burglary, car theft and robbery, occured in Newport city centre over a period of 9 years, from 2003 to 2012.
Overall, while the number of burglary incidents witnessed a downward trend, that of car theft and robbery only experienced minor fluctuations. During the period, robbery was the area of crime that had the least incidents.
In the first 5 years, the number of burglary cases increased slightly from about 3400 in 2003 to roughly 3800 in 2004, before undergone a significant drop to approximately 1200 incidents by 2008. Regarding car theft, there was 2800 incidents recorded in the beginning of the period, which remained steady until 2005 when the figure decreased to about 2200 incidents. There was a noticeable increase in the number of robbery incidents, from nearly 600 cases in 2003 to about 800 cases in 2005. This number then gradually dropped to 500 incidents in 2008.
From 2008 to the end of the period, car theft became the most popular type of crime, surpassing burglary. The figure for this crime area climbed from 2200 incidents in 2008 to about 2800 incidents in 2012. From 2008 to 2009, burglary experienced a small increase in the number of incidents, from 1100 incidents to nearly 1500 incidents respectively, before remained fluctuated until 2012. That of robbery varied from only 500 to 550 incidents in the remaining years, making it the least popular type of crime.
