It is noticeable that the number of men and women studying part-time and full-time in Britain has experienced an increase over the period. While males participation in full-time education saw a decline.
Looking first at male students, the number of men enrolled in full-time education fell slightly from 1 million in 1970/71 to 900 thousand in 1990/91. In contrast, the figure for males in part-time education increased steadily from around 150 thousand to around 200 thousand over the same period.
Turning to female students, the number of women participating in full-time education rose from 700 thousand in 1970/71 to 1.1 million in 1990/91. Additionally, the figure for women in part-time education increased significantly from 50 thousand to 200 thousand over the same period.
