Overall, in 1990, the most commonly used mode to travel to school was walking while travelling by car was the least used mode of transport. However, these statistics were reversed in the year 2010. The trips made via the rest of the modes saw a decline in the year 2010 as compared to 1990.
In 1990, more than 12 million trips to school were by walking, although this number saw a drastic fall to 6 million in 2010. A little more than 4 million trips were made by car, in 1990, which rose to more than 11 million in 2010.
The second highest commutes were by bus at 7 million in 1990, whereas, this number decreased to 5 million in 2010. The number of excursions by cycling was significantly reduced from 6.1 million in 1990, to only 2 million in 2010. The number of travels by a mixed mode of walking and bus, decreased by half, from 6 million to 3 million in 1990 and 2010 respectively.
