The bar graph illustrates the changes in the proportions of households whose accommodation was owned and rented in two different regions of the United Kingdom over a period of 93 years from 1918 to 2011. In general, it is evident that the number of homeowners had increased considerably in inverse proportions to the decreasing number of tenants during the same time period.
The rate of households in owned accommodation witnessed a sharp rise for the first 21 years to reach a plateau of just above 30 percent in 1939, with the trend set to continue until 1953. After which, the figures climbed dramatically to a peak of nearly 70 percent in 2001, before declining slightly to almost 65 percent for the remainder of the period.
In contrast, the percentage of households in rented accommodation dropped continuously from 1918 to 2001 when it reached a low of roughly 30 percent. The figures then experienced a upward trend by nearly 7 percent to approximately 37 percent at the end of the period.
