The bar chart compares the production and consumption of rice in seven countries in 2008, measured in million tonnes.
Overall, China and India were by far the largest producers and consumers of rice, while Japan produced and consumed the least. In most countries, rice production was slightly higher than consumption, except for Bangladesh and Indonesia, where consumption exceeded production.
China ranked first, producing around 15 million tonnes of rice and consuming almost the same amount. India followed closely, with approximately 13 million tonnes produced and about 12 million tonnes consumed. These figures were significantly higher than those of the other countries shown.
In Bangladesh and Indonesia, rice consumption was greater than production. Bangladesh produced roughly 6 million tonnes but consumed about 7 million tonnes, while Indonesia produced around 7 million tonnes and consumed approximately 8 million tonnes. In contrast, Vietnam and Thailand produced more rice than they consumed. Vietnam’s production stood at about 4 million tonnes compared to 2 million tonnes consumed, and Thailand produced roughly 5 million tonnes while consuming around 3 million tonnes. Japan had the lowest figures, with both production and consumption at about 2 million tonnes.
