The bar chart below illustrates the proportion of three groups of Japanese children aged from 5 years old to 16 years old taking part in four kinds of activities including watching TV,reading,playing computer games and riding the bike in 2018.
Overall, it is clear that children from 5 to 16 years old all like to spend their time on watching TV and they all have less interest in playing computer games,especially 12 to 16 years old children.
Watching TV was highly popular among all age groups. Nearly 95% of children aged 5 to 8 years watched TV, followed closely by 9 to 11-year-olds and 12 to 16-year-olds, both at around 80%.By contrast, riding the bike was more popular among older children. Approximately 60% of children aged 5 to 8 years rode bikes, compared to about 70% of 9 to 11-year-olds. This activity was most popular among the 12 to 16-year-olds, with a participation rate of nearly 80%.
The percentage of children playing computer games decreased with age. About 60% of the 5 to 8-year-olds played computer games, which dropped to around 50% for the 9 to 11-year-olds and further to 40% for the 12 to 16-year-olds.Reading showed a consistent participation rate among the age groups. Approximately 60% of children aged 5 to 8 years participated in reading activities. This percentage was slightly higher for the 9 to 11-year-olds and the 12 to 16-year-olds, both at about 70%.
