In general, there was a dramatic increase in the number of households in ownership of electrical appliances whereas households performing chores every week saw a significant decrease over the years.
One of the most prominent features is that families owning a refrigerator saw a significant growth of approximately 90% from 1920 to 1960. The rise remained steady started from the year 1980. Another significant trend is that households in the ownership of a vacuum cleaner saw a dramatic increase of 70% by 2000. However, there was a fluctuating trend regarding families using a washing machine, with an overall increasing trend over the decade.
Regarding the amount of time spent on doing household chores, there was a sharp decrease from 50 hours per week in 1920 to 20 hours per week in 1960. The decline started to slow down since 1960, with only a slight drop to 10 hours per week by 2019.
