The two charts compare the average number of minutes per day spent by UK males and females on household and leisure activities in 2008.
Overall, it is clear that women spent slightly less time on leisure activities compared to men, while in terms of housework, women tended to spend more time than men. Although this trend appears in the data, we can also observe that there is one leisure activity where women spent more time than men, and one housework activity where men spent more time than women.
According to the table, the leisure activities dominated by men include watching TV, listening to the radio, and using video devices, with an average of 137 minutes per day. This is followed by sports and exercise, at 15 minutes per day. However, reading books is a leisure activity where women spent more time than men, averaging 19 minutes per day.
In terms of housework activities, women dominated in most categories, spending the most time on cooking and washing (over 65 minutes), followed by shopping (more than 25 minutes), and clothing care such as washing and ironing (25 minutes). Interestingly, although men did not engage much in most housework activities, they spent an average of 19 minutes per day on repairing tasks while women only spent 15 minutes.
